3 Film-Like Photographic Sequence of People Boarding a Steamer on the James River in Virginia During the American Civil War
Photographs of people boarding a steamer via a pontoon landing on the James River in Virginia during the Civil War, c. 1864. The people boarding look like they might be civilians carrying their luggage. Numerous other docked steamers and sailing vessels are also visible as well as a covered wagon on the foreground.
These four looped photographs were taken in quick succession with a 4-lens stereoscopic camera and reveal that a time of possibly a few seconds between when the images on the glass negative plate were exposed. A primitive film emerges when they are animated as seen here. Probably taken by a photographer employed by Mathew Brady.
